Fiscal year 2024–25

Federal spending by theme

In fiscal year 2024–25, federal spending reported by theme totalled $527.8 billion, or $17,612 per tax filer. Each theme groups programs by what the money is for, in any department.

Basis: actual spending by program from Departmental Results Reports, reconciled to Public Accounts expenditures, plus Employment Insurance benefits and the Canada Child Benefit from the Public Accounts consolidated statement (they are not appropriated, so departments do not report them as program spending). Other items that are not appropriated are left out, so the total is lower than total expenses in the budget.
